A multi-agency operation is continuing this week to fix a sinkhole at Wallsend, which forced residents into emergency accommodation at the weekend.
About 9.45am on Saturday 25 March, officers attached to Newcastle City Police District attended Fogo Street.
It followed reports of a suspected mine subsidence.
An exclusion zone was quickly established, which included the precautionary evacuation of a number of properties, initially impacting approximately 40 locals.
Following extensive assessments and work by multiple agencies and utility providers to ensure risks were mitigated, most residents have since returned home.
However, 17 displaced locals remain in alternative accommodation arrangements.
Water services have been reactivated, while electricity is expected to be returned to the area later today.
As at 1pm on Monday 27 March, there have been no reports of injuries or structural damage to buildings.
The situation continues to be closely monitored by specialist agencies and utility providers, with an engineering team expected to conduct further assessments at the site over coming hours.
Parts of Fogo, Kokera, Bulkara and Cowper streets remain closed.
Motorists and pedestrians are urged to avoid the area.
