John Hunter nurse Trent Williams wins top gong

You’re in good hands at John Hunter Hospital if Trent Williams is tending to you.

The local clinical consultant was this week named joint winner of Nurse of the Year at the 11th annual NSW Health 2023 Excellence in Nursing and Midwifery Awards.

He garnered success from hundreds of nominations throughout NSW in nine categories, which recognise exceptional care being provided by staff across the NSW Health system.

Wallsend MP Sonia Hornery was among the first to praise Mr Williams.

“Trent is certainly deserving of the honour for his commitment and compassion in providing exceptional and innovative care to all patients,” she said.

“We know that all of our health care workers provide the highest level of professionalism and dedication.

“So, to be acknowledged in this way demonstrates that Trent goes well and truly above and beyond in his work.

“I’m sure he’s left his mark on many patients at the John Hunter in his time there.”

Minister for Health Ryan Park also extended his sincere congratulations to the 29 winners and finalists at Parliament House.

“The professional achievements, compassion and dedication on display are nothing short of remarkable,” he said.

“I want to thank all of our nurses and midwives for the skill, professionalism and heartfelt care they provide each and every day.”

NSW Health chief nursing and midwifery officer Jacqui Cross said it was a wonderful opportunity to identify the outstanding work nurses and midwives did daily.

She extended her gratitude to all the nominees, too.

“These awards celebrate all nurses and midwives across the continuum of their career,” Ms Cross said.

“One of many highlights was the Judith Meppem Lifetime Achievement Award, which went to Anna Thornton.

“It recognises the contribution of an outstanding nurse or midwife who, throughout their career, has had a positive and sustained influence on patients, the health system and their profession.”
