Jets’ women kicking new goals, thanks to Port of Newcastle

Hot on the heels of a ground-breaking partnership with Port of Newcastle (PoN), the Newcastle Jets’ women’s team will benefit from a similar windfall.

The announcement aligns with the recent renaming of the national competition to better unite football in Australia under one banner.

PoN’s sponsorship commitment now sees the company backing both the men’s and women’s squads for the first time.

It’s a deal that’s put a smile on Jets’ executive chairman Shane Mattiske’s face.

“We are thrilled to announce Port of Newcastle as the major partner of our A-League Women’s side,” he said.

“Our players will be very proud to have the PoN logo feature on the front of their home and away jerseys in 2021/22.

“The shift to a gold strip for our A-League Women’s team marks a new period for the club, too.

“So, it’s great to see Port of Newcastle, such a big player in this region’s business community, make a strong vow to supporting women in football.”

The affiliation will also provide greater opportunities for female footballers across Northern NSW.

“Our women’s team should receive the same recognition and respect as the men and this announcement supports that goal,” Mattiske said.

“With the confirmation of the Port of Newcastle’s support, we’re now looking forward to adding to our squad.”

PoN CEO Craig Carmody said the Port was delighted to be bonded by gold with not just the men’s but also the women’s A-League side for the next three seasons.

“We are passionate about our community and football and could think of no better time for Port of Newcastle to lend its support to another Newcastle icon – the Newcastle Jets A-League Women’s team,” he explained.

“We see this partnership for the three years ahead as an opportunity for PoN to give a really great gift to local residents of something positive and enjoyable for families and football fans alike.

“And, to bolster women’s sport in the Newcastle and Hunter region as well.”

Carmody said Port of Newcastle had partnered with the Jets’ women’s team to inspire future generations of young female footballers into the sport and, potentially, one day a Jets jersey.

“As a traditionally male-dominated industry, PoN is keenly focused on supporting diversity and inclusion, gender balance and opportunities for women within our workforce,” he stated.

“So, the opportunity to support other women to pursue their goals presented the perfect partnership for us.

“By supporting the Jets’ A-League Women’s team, the Port hopes to inspire another generation of women and young footballers to follow their dreams and pursue any career they want to within community be it at the Port or on the football field.”

Among them are daughters of Port staff, such as nine-year-old Thommy Byrnes, who had the pleasure of meeting players Cassidy Davis, Gema Simon and Lauren Allan to see the new gold kit up close and learn some tips.

“I was like ‘oh my gosh, I get to go and meet my idols the Jets players’,” Thommy said.

“It was such an amazing experience for me because when I grow up, it is my aim to play for the Newcastle Jets and then after that play for the Matildas and represent Australia.

“I am really happy about them playing in the gold jumper because I have a lot of jerseys in my cupboard.

“I’m looking forward to getting the gold jersey to add a different one to my collection.

“I love the Jets so much, they are so amazing, how they all work together.

“I want to be a Jets player when I grow up, too.”
