O’Donovan then stepped up on the stroke of half-time and converted a penalty on the second attempt for a 3-0 advantage at the break.
Newcastle added a fourth moments after the restart as Matt Ridenton squeezed the ball home from a tight angle, before O’Donovan scored again from the spot to make it five with less than an hour on the clock.
Western Sydney substitute Mitch Duke added a consolation just seconds after coming on when he rifled a header past Glen Moss.
