Jets ready to herald a new ‘golden’ era

SHARE

The “gold” is back.

For the first time in a decade, the Newcastle Jets will return to their roots for their home kit, with Port of Newcastle featuring as the major partner on a new-look jersey for the A-League season.

While the club has most recently played in blue and red primarily, some of the organisation’s greatest moments have come in gold.

So, from the 2021/22 season onwards, the Jets will welcome “gold” as the primary strip colour again.

This connection to the Jets’ heritage will bond its future with the great players and moments of the past, too.

“While the club is moving forward into a new era in many ways, we are determined to reconnect with our origins and uphold the history of football in the region,” executive chairman Shane Mattiske said.

“It was a clear decision to return to wearing gold and it is a notion we know many supporters and former players strongly support.

“Our return to gold marks the perfect time for the club to unite with another local icon, Port of Newcastle, our city’s golden port.”

Over the next three seasons, Port of Newcastle’s gold and navy logo will be proudly worn by players on the front of the jersey for the A-League and FFA Cup campaigns.

“The players love the new kit and the Jets are extremely excited to be teaming up with the Port of Newcastle,” Mattiske said.

“The Port is a huge supporter of jobs among our fan base, the Hunter region’s economy and, just like the Jets, are an iconic part of our community.

“This partnership marks two local icons coming together to give a real boost to the Jets ahead of what we hope will be a stellar season.

“Bonded by gold, our alliance will help us drive the success of football within this region and give fans something really positive to look forward to after a really challenging time for all.”

Port of Newcastle CEO Craig Carmody said his staff were thrilled to join forces with the A-League club.

“The Port’s been here for 227 years and we have a strong workforce of Jets supporters among our own Port of Newcastle team,” he stated.

“Many don’t know that the Port of Newcastle has a long history of loving and supporting football, with some of the first wharfies to work at the Port through the 1900s belonging to social teams and kicking the ball around the Port after a hard day’s work.

“We could think of no better time for Port of Newcastle to lend its support to another Newcastle icon – the Newcastle Jets.

“We see this partnership for the next three years as an opportunity for Port of Newcastle to give a really great gift to the community of something positive and enjoyable for local families and football fans alike.

“As well to our dedicated staff who have worked to keep the Port safe and operating through the challenges of the past year.”

The major partnership marks the start of an exciting period for the club, with new A-League manager Arthur Papas leading the build of a new and very competitive squad ready to strongly challenge for success.

It’s music to the ears of Port of Newcastle’s biggest Jets fan, George Soufaris.

“I’ve been a supporter since the day the club was born and remember fondly their glory seasons playing in gold,” he said.

“I’m ecstatic that the club is returning to the iconic gold jersey and it’s even more special that the Port’s logo is on the front of it.

“I reckon I’ll be among the first to order the new jersey and be wearing it at the Port and around Newcastle.”

Mr Soufaris and his nephew Frankie featured in the Jets and Port’s jersey reveal hype video alongside players, including Jason Hoffman, in the new kit and a specially made gold football.

The Jets also welcome the return of VIVA as the playing kit partner and clothing brand manufacturer for 2021/22.

The change comes after a modification in business model between VIVA Global and Apelle occurred during the off-season.

The Gold Port of Newcastle Jets home kit will be arriving for fans in mid-October, but can be purchased now through the club’s website.
