Newcastle hit the afterburners to extended its unbeaten streak to six games with a dominant 3-0 win over Adelaide in the A-League at the weekend.
The Jets lost Abdiel Arroyo and Bernie Ibini to injury before kick-off on Sunday, but Irishman Wes Hoolahan came into the starting line-up.
It was another playmaker, Dimi Petratos, who broke the game open in the 41st minute as his inch-perfect cross left striker Roy O’Donovan with a simple tap-in.
Newcastle went into the break 1-0 and soon doubled its lead when Matt Millar latched onto Nigel Boogaard’s long ball and dinked his shot over onrushing Adelaide goalkeeper Paul Izzo.
It was three just moments later.
Bobby Burns somehow managed to get a cross away under pressure and Steven Ugarkovic powered a header from more than 15 yards out into the back of the net.
The win moved the Jets up to ninth position, four points behind Western Sydney.
The club’s clash with Wellington has been postponed, but Newcastle is expected to face Central Coast behind closed doors on Saturday 28 March from 5pm.
