The high-flying Newcastle Jets have bolstered their playing stocks ahead of their clash with the Western Sydney Wanders this weekend.
English midfielder Zach Clough put pen to paper during the week on a two-and-a-half-year deal with the A-League Men’s (ALM) club.
His signing is another positive shot in the arm for Mark Milligan’s troops, who now occupy fourth place on the ladder.
Clough, 30, joins from Malaysian Super League side Selangor FC where he has played for the past season.
Prior to this, he took the pitch for Adelaide United in the ALM, making 85 appearances and scoring 19 goals in the competition.
“Zach is a fantastic footballer who will bring quality and experience to the club,” Milligan said.
“He can play numerous roles, too.
“I’m confident he’ll provide leadership to this young group, leading by example both on and off the field.”
Clough started out his professional playing career with Bolton Wanderers in England before having stints with Nottingham Forrest, Rochdale AFC, Wigan Athletic and Carlisle United.
He admitted he’s excited to link up with Newcastle.
“I’m delighted to be back here in Australia… and with the Jets,” Clough said.
“This move feels like the perfect fit for me at this time of my career.
“I want to keep improving and I feel like I have joined the right club for that reason.”
Following back-to-back victories over Auckland FC (3-1) and Melbourne City (1-0), Newcastle has an ideal opportunity to consolidate its position on the table.
The Jets tackle the Wanderers at CommBank Stadium on Saturday 17 January from 5pm.
They’ll then return to McDonald Jones Stadium, for a vital showdown with the Wellington Phoenix, on Friday 23 January.
