Newcastle’s Jenny’s Place Domestic Violence Resource Centre is facing an ongoing crisis.
The centre may be forced to close if it doesn’t receive vital funding from the State Government.
Jenny’s Place costs $300,000 each year to maintain and provides help to more than 60 women each month through counselling, safety and exit planning and other specialised support services.
Newcastle State MP, Tim Crakanthorp, said it was “absolutely ludicrous” that the government had not provided more support.
“The government has committed $431 million to domestic and family violence services and they can’t find $300,000 for this vital service,” he said.
“What they are asking for is pocket change to this government and its response is not good enough.”
Last Friday, Mr Crakanthorp and Shadow Minister for Women and the Prevention of Domestic and Family Violence, Trish Doyle, were joined by representatives from Jenny’s Place to renew their plea to the government to fund this service.
Crakanthorp is concerned about what will happen to the women Jenny’s Place assist if it closes.
“They are absolutely crucial because, unfortunately, domestic violence is very prevalent within our region and there is a high demand for these services,” he said.
“It’s a huge issue right across Australia, one woman is killed every week.”
