It’s time to clean up Maitland

SHARE

The annual Clean Up Australia Day this weekend aims to bring the community together to clean up litter around the local environment.

And, Maitland residents are encouraged to choose a location and organise a group to help with the effort on Sunday 7 March.

“Participating in Clean Up Australia Day gives the community an opportunity to create a sense of ownership and connection with their local green space,” Maitland City Council’s manager environment and sustainability Catherine Pepper said.

“In community surveys, residents called for more of these kinds of opportunities.

“Being outside in the environment, socialising with like-minded friends and participating in community events is also great for general wellbeing.”

Due to COVIDSafe precautions, Clean Up Australia Day 2021 will be a little different from past years, with groups urged to limit their sizes to 10 volunteers and practice social distancing.

In 2020, Maitland’s Clean Up activities saw more than 200kg of litter removed from the environment.

To help minimise littering every day, the community can utilise car litter bags available free of charge from the Maitland Visitor Information Centre.
