Maitland Magpies vice-president Corey Goodwin has praised committee members past and present following the unveiling of its new amenities building at Cooks Square Park.
The long-awaited project, which endured a few setbacks along the way, was officially opened on Friday 28 November, much to the football club members’ delight.
Jointly-funded by the NSW Government and the Commonwealth’s Local Roads and Community Infrastructure Program, the $1.15 million investment comprised the construction of more modern, gender-inclusive and accessible male and female changerooms.
As part of the venture, drainage works were also completed to improve operations at the facility.

“It’s been a long time coming,” Mr Goodwin said.
“And, thanks to a lot of work in the background by our older committee members, such as Chris Rafferty.
“They did so much to get us to this point.
“All the players are excited, especially the women… they now have their own changerooms.
“There’s also a bit more functional space, which is appreciated, too.
“I’d hate to think how long the old building was there… it existed when I started playing here as a kid.”
Mr Goodwin said the round ball code, and Cooks Square Park, was important to the Maitland football community.
“We boast one of the biggest clubs in premier competitions,” he told the Newcastle Weekly.
“Originally, about a decade ago, we were a three-team organisation in the senior premier division.
“But, we’re just ever-growing.
“Now, we’re fielding men’s and women’s sides, and junior programs, all in the high level of Northern NSW Football (NNSWF).
“So, the recent work at Cooks Square Park, along with the upgrading of our lights, means we’ll be qualified to broadcast games with Foxtel and outlets like that.
“I believe the Newcastle Jets are already looking to come and have a few sessions here.
“That adds to the excitement.
“The pitch is one of the best in the region, if not the best.
“Despite all the rain in 2025, we only had two washouts this season.”

Maitland City mayor Philip Penfold said the latest amenities were a “major improvement” that catered to all levels and abilities.
“This will benefit Maitland FC, and other local clubs, now and into the future,” he explained.
“We’re proud to deliver improvements like these to support our expanding football community, so our athletes have the facilities they need to play at their best.
“Council acknowledges the extended time it has taken to complete this project and would like to thank everyone for their patience.”
Minister for Regional NSW Tara Moriarty agreed.
“Local sporting facilities are so central to our regional communities for fostering healthy habits and bringing people together to enjoy connection with one another,” she said.
“The new changerooms will also support the continued growth of female participation, providing them with a safe and private space to prepare for games.”
Paterson MP Meryl Swanson admitted the investment was about more than just “bricks and mortar”.
“It’s about building a future where everyone, especially women and girls, feel welcome and supported in sport,” she said.
