Isabella Crebert is urging other young girls to follow in her footsteps and apply for the 2026 International Women’s Day (IWD) Loretta Baker Scholarship.
The University of Newcastle student secured the maiden grant in 2025, which honours Maitland City’s first female mayor and supports those in the LGA to achieve their goals across arts, culture, business, health, sport and more.
As well, the annual $1,000 bursary fosters leadership, personal growth and community involvement.
Council recently opened submissions for the 2026 accolade, with the winner being announced at its IWD celebration at Maitland Town Hall on Friday 6 March.
“I was incredibly grateful to be the inaugural recipient of the International Women’s Day Loretta Baker Scholarship,” Ms Crebert said.
“It helped to support my travel to Europe to collect data in Zurich, Switzerland, for my PhD and present my research at the International Academy of Forensic Sciences conference in Dublin, Ireland.
“However, this scholarship is about more than just funding.
“It’s encouragement to young women in regional areas, like Maitland, to pursue their goals.
“It is also a testament to Loretta Baker as a trailblazer in leadership and as an inspiration for all women.”
Maitland City mayor Philip Penfold said the scholarship reflected several of council’s priorities.
“We are proud to support local women through this initiative,” he explained.
“By investing in their potential, we’re helping to build a connected city with thriving communities where everyone has the opportunity to achieve together.”
The scholarship also aligns with the 2026 IWD theme #GiveToGain, promoting generosity and investment in women’s abilities, so that when they thrive, the whole community benefits.
IWD takes place on Sunday 8 March.
Eligible women in the Maitland area are encouraged to apply.
