Irishman Joe Shaughnessy will bring a “wealth of experience to the Jets”, according to Newcastle coach Mark Milligan.
The Hunter-based A-League club announced this week it had agreed to terms with the 32-year-old for the next two seasons.
His signing follows that of Sydney FC midfielder Max Burgess and Young Socceroo Alex Badolato for 2025/26.
Shaughnessy joins the local outfit from Scottish Premiership side Dundee FC, where he’s recently plied his trade, including a stint as captain.
“Joe’s been in leadership positions at all the clubs he has played for,” Milligan said.
“That’ll be invaluable in helping grow the football that we endeavour to play.
“Joe, like all the players we are bringing in first and foremost, will add to the playing group as a person… and then as a footballer.
“I’m confident his character will help mould the team we have into the football side we will become.”
A central defender, Shaughnessy also previously represented his country at under-21 level, playing four times for Ireland.
But, he’s excited to get started in Newcastle.
“I’m thrilled to have signed with the Jets,” he said.
“I can’t wait to get over, meet everyone and start working.
“When the opportunity presented itself, it really didn’t take me long to decide.
“I spoke to a few Aussie players that I’ve crossed paths within Scotland… and they all spoke very highly of the club and city.
“It’s a new challenge for me but one that I’m looking forward to getting stuck into.
“I’d like to help the organisation improve on its results/performances from last season.
“And, I hope that with the experience I’ll bring from my career so far, I’ll be able to play my part in this new chapter for the club.”
The Jets will tackle a combined Northern NSW Football outfit at Darling Street Oval on Saturday 20 September.
