Investing in the future of Cessnock

Cessnock City Council is putting its money where its mouth is – and investing in the future of its LGA.

The organisation’s Mayoral Scholarship Program provides financial support for residents of Local Government Area (LGA) to help achieve their educational goals at TAFE or university.

It targets students undertaking studies in industries offering gainful employment in the Cessnock LGA, such as hospitality, tourism, education, engineering, medical, mining, communications and manufacturing.

So far, the initiative has assisted 223 pupils since its inception in 2002.

“It’s our goal to have as many residents as possible achieve their higher education and career aspirations by providing essential financial support,” Cessnock City mayor Jay Suvaal said.

“This assistance allows them to focus on their studies and alleviates some of the stress associated with further education.

“I’m proud of this program and excited about the prospect of growing it with the support of businesses in the area, such as the Cessnock Leagues Club.”

Since 2002, and with the help of local sponsors, the Mayoral Scholarship Program has handed out grants to the value of $558,000.

“Sponsors receive promotional benefits while supporting youth, residents and jobs in the area,” Cr Suvaal said.

“We’re now seeking the support of local businesses to become sponsors of the initiative.”

In 2022, council will also welcome sponsorship inquiries from individuals or families who may be in a position to lend much-needed financial assistance.
