An investigation is underway after a body was found following a two-vehicle crash on the Pacific Highway in the state’s north on Thursday afternoon.
Emergency services were called to the intersection of Wotton Way in Coolongolook, approximately 16km south of Nabiac, about 2.40pm on 2 October.
Motorists are being urged to avoid the area and follow the directions of police southbound on the M1.
Traffic is expected to remain heavy for several hours.
Officers attached to Manning Great Lakes Police District were told a SUV and a sedan collided before both cars set alight.
Fire and Rescue NSW (FRNSW) and NSW Rural Fire Service (NSW RFS) attended the scene and extinguished the blaze.
Following inquiries, a body was located inside the sedan.
However, it’s yet to be formally identified.
The driver of the SUV – a woman in her 50s – was treated by NSW Ambulance paramedics before being airlifted to John Hunter Hospital in a serious condition.
Extra resources from the Crash Investigation Unit and Police Rescue have been called to assist with further inquiries.
