Investigation underway into armed robbery in Newcastle

An investigation is underway following an armed robbery at Newcastle on Wednesday morning, leaving a man seriously injured.

About 4.45am on 28 February, police were called to a licensed premises at the intersection of Union and Bull streets in Cooks Hill.

They were informed two men – armed with a machete and a baseball bat – forced entry to The Commonwealth Hotel, known as The Commy, and confronted two employees.

The armed males, described as being of Caucasian appearance, aged in their 20s and wearing masks, then fled with cash.

Officers from Newcastle City Police District attended, and a man was found injured on King Street.

Police performed CPR until the arrival of NSW Ambulance paramedics.

The employee was reportedly injured while attempting to flee the armed men.

He was taken to John Hunter Hospital in a serious condition, suffering head injuries and broken ribs.

The second employee was not physically injured.

“After an incident at The Commonwealth Hotel early this morning, we will be closed for trade as we are currently assisting police with their enquiries,” the owners posted on Facebook.

“Our immediate concerns and thoughts are with the staff involved and their speedy recovery.

“The Commonwealth Hotel will reopen for trade later on today once we have been given clearance to do so. We thank you for your patience while we deal with this very unfortunate incident.”

Crime scenes were established with Union Street closed between Parry and Bull streets.

Local traffic diversions are in place.
