A police investigation is underway after unsafe and illegal behaviour shocked onlookers at a trail bike congregation in Mayfield at the weekend.
Officers attached to Newcastle City PD were called to a skate park on Ingall Street about 1pm on Sunday 14 June following reports of a large gathering of people, instigated by a clothing company promotion.
On arrival, they found between 150 and 200 individuals at the location, while a further 30-to-40 were riding unregistered trail bikes in parkland and on surrounding streets.
It’s understood PolAir was also deployed from Sydney to monitor the situation.
Streets were closed nearby with traffic redirected due to safety concerns.
Several youngsters even claimed officers assaulted them.
Newcastle City Police District Commander Superintendent Kylie Endemi APM said a woman was arrested following an alleged assault.
“She’s since been released pending further inquiries,” she stated.
“A police vehicle was also damaged during the incident while we had to deploy capsicum spray to break up a fight.
“We’re now looking through footage from officers’ body-worn video and police in-car video.
“So, our investigations remain ongoing.
“But, we will not tolerate this kind of conduct.”
