An investigation is underway into an alleged armed robbery at KFC in Jesmond at the weekend.

Officers attached to Newcastle City Police District were called to a shopping centre precinct on Blue Gum Road about 11.15am on Saturday 23 May.

They received details a man entered the business with a small knife and threatened a male employee before taking cash and leaving on foot.

Thankfully, no injuries have been reported.

“As inquiries continue, anyone with information can contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or nsw.crimestoppers.com.au,” a spokesperson said.

“The public is reminded not to report particulars via NSW Police social media pages.”

Meanwhile, the incident comes after the news KFC could be relocated to a new site in Jesmond.

Plans were lodged with City of Newcastle (CN) last month for a $3.6 million fast-food restaurant.

The development at 25-27 Blue Gum Road, near Jesmond Central, would include a dual-lane drive-through, 12 car parks and signage on the locale next door to the Jesmond Fruit Barn.

The area has remained empty since demolition approvals were granted in 2008 and 2018.

However, it’s zoned for commercial use.

KFC is seeking to operate from 6am to 11pm Sunday to Wednesday and until midnight Thursday to Saturday.
