Intersection upgrade paves way for Cedar Mill

In news to delight locals, a multi-million-dollar upgrade is slated for the busy intersection connecting Wyee Road and Alliance Avenue at Morisset.

Expected to be finished by June 2025, the new four-legged roundabout will be constructed providing an additional road into the Cedar Mill area.

The $2.5m project is supported by the NSW Government’s NSW Voluntary Planning Agreement Program.

Development contributions will also be made from Lake Macquarie City Council’s Morisset catchment and a private investment from the owners of Cedar Mill, Winarch Group.

The updated infrastructure is set to cater for the significant growth experienced in the suburb, with several new developments planned for the area.

Lake Macquarie City mayor Adam Shultz said the intersection build aimed to relieve resident headaches due to high traffic and ongoing construction.

“Morisset is a key growth area and it’s important that we have the infrastructure to support new developments, such as residential lots, now and into the future,” he explained.

“As we see the population of our city increase, it’s important we have more homes, services and enabling infrastructure, so that young people, families, workers and our elderly have the opportunity to have a great life and live right here in Lake Macquarie.

“No doubt it is a growing area… and there are growing pains.

“But, it’s great to have the state government and Lake Macquarie City Council working hand in hand to try and resolve some of those issues.”

Lake Macquarie Independent MP Greg Piper said bringing further investment into the area was crucial with a key employer, Eraring Power Station, set to close its doors shortly.

“Morisset is experiencing large-scale growth in housing and commercial and industrial precincts,” he stated.

“This development must be supported by reliable, efficient and integrated transport infrastructure.”

Mr Piper also emphasised the importance of the upgrade to ensure motorist safety.

“It is a very busy intersection, but it’s also a dangerous one as well,” he said.

“If you stand here long enough, you’ll see people being coerced or encouraged to take very significant risks, particularly as you turn right back to Wyee.

“This is a part of the network upgrade.

“It probably isn’t going to address the peak hour bottleneck that we’re getting because most of that is around the Wyee and Mandalong Road intersection, and as you run through the township of Morisset.

“But, it is a part of the solution.”
