International Women’s Day march: 92 and here again

Hunter Workers Women’s Committee will stage an International Women’s Day march this weekend at Hamilton’s Gregson Park.

The Saturday 4 March event, now in its 92nd year, is aimed at highlighting the achievements of women locally, as well as calling on leaders and changemakers to address persistent ongoing barriers for gender equality.

Local activists will be speaking from 9.30am, including;

  • Deahnna Richardson: the first Indigenous women elected to City of Newcastle Council
  • Sarah Williams: founder of What Were You Wearing Australia
  • Erin Killion: community organiser with the Hunter Jobs Alliance
  • Nissa Phillips and Seema Sanghi: local housing insecurity and homelessness activists

The 2023 rally marks 92 years since Newcastle’s first-ever International
Women’s Day march was held.

Hunter Workers Women’s Committee chair Leanne Holmes admits there is still a long way to go in the fight for equality.

“Since last year’s International Women’s Day, Australian women have fought for, and won, enormous advances for equality such as finally enshrining 10 days paid domestic violence leave, and amending the Fair Work Act to expressly prohibit sexual harassment in the workplace,” she said.

“Yet we still have so far to go.

“Sexual assaults and gendered violence have increased in Australia for 10 years in a row, and are at an all-time high according to the ABS.

“Female-dominated occupations continue to be vastly undervalued, as evidenced by the pitiful remuneration and continued real wage cuts of nurses and teachers led by the NSW Liberal government.

“Women are also being disproportionately slammed by the housing and rental crisis unfolding across the state.

“A report by Anglicare released last week found older single women aged over 55 are eight times more likely to be homeless.”

The march is one of several events to be held in the Hunter in coming days. Here’s a more comprehensive list:
