One of the first recipients of a Greater Charitable Foundation Equity Scholarship is urging University of Newcastle (UoN) students to follow his lead.
With applications for the latest round now open, Nader Alkaysi knows how important the program has become for those seeking financial assistance to support their studies.
And, in 2005, five scholars will be granted $30,000 as part of a $150,000 three-year partnership.
Mr Alkaysi, who arrived in Australia from Syria in 2016, admitted the funding would help him fulfil his lifelong goals.
“Ever since I was a child, I’ve always wanted to be a civil engineer,” he said.
“So, receiving the Greater Charitable Foundation Equity Scholarship has made a tremendous impact.
“It aids with living expenses, ensuring I can dedicate more time to my education and less time worrying about finances.
“Also, it provides me with a sense of validation and motivation, knowing that someone believes in my potential.
“My aspirations for the future are to become a skilled and innovative civil engineer.
“I am passionate about contributing to the reconstruction and development of my country of origin, Syria, by applying my knowledge and skills to create sustainable and resilient infrastructure.
“I’d like to extend my heartfelt gratitude to the Greater Charitable Foundation for its generous support.”
Greater Bank chief distribution officer Emma Brokate said the scholarships played a key role in making university education achievable for Australians.
“Each year the UoN awards more than $4 million in grants to students to support their studies, which is something we are especially proud to be part of,” she explained.
“The wonderful thing about the Equity Scholarship program is that it’s open to all disciplines, from civil engineering like Nader, to nursing, to communication – they’re available for pupils of more than 45 of the university’s undergraduate courses.
“So, it’s an investment in their life.
“More than just excel in their education, we want to help students enjoy the university experience, meet friends, and learn important life skills to carry throughout their working days and beyond.”
Pro Vice-Chancellor for the UoN’s College of Engineering, Science and Environment Professor Craig Simmons said the uni was grateful to partner with the Greater Charitable Foundation.
“Being able to support our students with these forms of financial assistance enables them to make the greatest investment possible into their future,” he added.
“Removing barriers associated with monetary adversity gives them an opportunity to make the most out of their university experience, too.”
