I’ll forever cherish the moment: Johnston

To say Lake Macquarie rugby league product Caitlan Johnston grabbed her opportunity with both hands would be an understatement.

The Newcastle Knights NRLW star impressed all and sundry when she debuted for NSW in the Ampol Women’s State of Origin showdown at GIO Stadium, Canberra, on Friday night.

With family and friends cheering her on from the stands, the Novocastrian tore into her Queensland rivals, from the bench, as the Blues sealed the series 20-14.

“It was nerve-wracking for me, getting that [phone] call from coach Kylie Hilder to say I was in,” Johnston said.

“I think it was just as big a moment for my dad; he was excited to see me in the blue jersey.

“But, I wore it with pride – and I’ll forever cherish the moment.

“It’s always been a goal of mine since representing NSW in the under-19s (Origin) fixture.”

Thankfully, Hilder kept things nice and simple for Johnston in her maiden senior appearance.

And, she responded in kind, launching into a couple of big tackles in the first half and a 30m charge from the kick-off to start the second period.

“Kylie told me what I needed to do,” the 21-year-old said.

“So, for me, it was just a matter of getting out there and doing my job.

“I felt I did that, too.

“I just grabbed the ball and ran it straight; I didn’t want to try and overplay it.

“I thought our middles were outstanding and were probably the difference [tonight].

“The result ended up how we wanted it.

“Overall, it was a great experience and, to be honest, I’m still in a bit of shock.”

The Windale junior made history when she became the first player signed by the Knights for their inaugural NRLW season.

And, the proud Awabakal and Gomeroi woman recently re-committed to Newcastle for the upcoming 2022 campaign.

Head coach Ronald Griffiths admitted he was pleased to have her on board.

“It’s an exciting time for the club and for Caitlan,” he said.

“Being the Indigenous All Stars captain and representative level player, she possesses great experience.

“Her leadership qualities will ensure we have strong inclusiveness in the group.

“Since I’ve been at the club, I’ve noticed her great communication skills and her connection to her teammates is a fantastic asset to this NRLW squad.”

Johnston will return to the Knights in July, along with her fellow Origin alumni Millie Boyle, Tamika Upton, Yasmin Clydsdale and Kirra Dibb.

The 2022 competition is scheduled to start in August.
