Hunter’s golden effort at NSW Masters SLS Championships

Hunter surf life saving clubs have excelled at the prestigious 2024 NSW Surf Life Saving Masters Championships at Queenscliff Beach.

Several local competitors collected medals over the two days, with the event wrapping up on Thursday 14 March.

Just after noon, an ecstatic Stockton SLSC team earned the organisation’s first gold, with Katie Mulquiney, Kylie Whitbread and Jo-anne Dryden positively stoked to take out the 130-Year Female Single Ski Relay.

Others to claim victory included Merewether SLSC’s Patricia Stallard (65-69 years Female Beach Flags), Swansea-Belmont SLSC’s Nathan Croal (45-49 years Male Single Ski), Redhead SLSC’s Stephen Stallard (65-69 years Male Single Ski), Stockton Team A – Glen Bernard, Jason Upton (40-44 years Male Double Ski), Caves Beach Team A – John Gifford, Warren Thomson (60-64 years Male Double Ski), Caves Beach SLSC’s Paul Carter (Combined male ski 70 & 75), who joined Robert Hunt to win the 70-74 years Male Double Ski, too.

Overall, North Bondi SLSC was named champion club for a second straight year, with 409 points, squeezing past neighbours Bondi Surf Bathers LSC (402) and Manly LSC (338).

Shelly Beach SLSC, on the Central Coast, finished fourth with 219.

Stockton SLSC snared a Top 15 spot on 89 points, ahead of local rivals Caves Beach SLSC (45), Swansea-Belmont SLSC (24), Redhead SLSC (23), Merewether SLSC (16), Newcastle SLSC (5), Nobbys – Newc (5) and Dixon Park SLSC (2).

The 2024 NSW Surf Life Saving Championships will continue on Friday 15 March, with the beginning of the open and surf boat championships.
