Hunter workers wanted to deliver democracy

SHARE

The NSW Electoral Commission is recruiting more than 30,000 people to deliver Local Government elections in December, with thousands of jobs still available across the Hunter.

While 20,000 individuals have expressed their interest so far, Election Support Services director Wayne Morgan said additional applicants were needed more than ever before.

“We’re hiring extra staff in line with our COVID-19 Safety Plan,” he explained.

“Extra staff will support people in checking-in and out of polling places, maintaining physical distancing and additional cleaning measures.

“There are a range of opportunities available across the state.

“If you’re enthusiastic about working with your community, it’s an excellent way to earn some extra money and learn new skills.

“There are jobs available just on election day, of course, but there’s also a range of positions to be filled over the next 10 weeks.

“Pay rates are very competitive and we provide training to staff who’ll join a huge team working together to deliver the election.

“To help keep our staff and voters safe, we will also be working in line with COVID-19 safety guidance and any public health orders.”

Election officials perform a range of tasks on election day, including:

  • Providing information and assistance to voters
  • Sorting and counting ballot papers
  • Working together to implement COVID-safe practices

“If you’re available to work on Saturday 4 December and enrolled to vote, you can submit an expression of interest to work as an election official,” Mr Morgan said.

“You don’t need previous experience, but many of our election day staff enjoy it so much, they return election after election.”

The NSW Electoral Commission expects all applicants who can be safely immunised against COVID-19 to be vaccinated.
