The region’s position as a leader in Australia’s energy transition will take centre stage at this month’s 2025 Hunter New Energy Symposium.
Now in its third year, the 21-22 May event is presented by New.E – Hunter New Energy and HunterNet and expected to draw business leaders, government agencies, researchers and investors focused on accelerating the clean energy evolution.
The 2025 program will highlight major regional projects in hydrogen, electrification and industrial decarbonisation, while also addressing workforce development and economic transformation.
Co-lead of New.E Boris Novak said the event came at a pivotal time and would deepen conversations on the Hunter’s leadership in the energy transition.
“The pace of change is extraordinary, akin to an industrial revolution, but playing out over years rather than decades,” he stated.
“This year, we’re placing even greater emphasis on collaboration and action.”
Featured technologies will include a 75kW recharging station and Driftex electric mining vehicle from Ampcontrol, demonstrating the Hunter’s growing capabilities in zero-emission technology.
The Port of Newcastle is highlighting its evolving role from coal export hub to clean energy gateway, alongside key supporters EnergyCo NSW, the NSW Government and the City of Newcastle (CN).
Council’s executive director of planning and environment Michelle Bisson said CN was proud to once again host the event and lead the way to sustainability.
“It’s exciting to have the third annual symposium at Newcastle City Hall, the same venue that hosted world renowned energy crusader Dr Saul Griffith, in 2024,” she added.
“We are thrilled to contribute to an event that brings representatives from industry, government, research and capital markets to Newcastle and supports our vision for a more sustainable future.”
International guests from New Zealand’s Invercargill, as well as Western Australia’s Kwinana, will join discussions, along with contributors from TAFE NSW and the Net Zero Economy Authority.
