Hunter students rewarded with scholarship certificates

SHARE

More than 40 students from Hunter high schools and vocational institutions have received a helping hand to further their studies.

The youngsters were awarded educational scholarship certificates at the Mentor Support Network’s (MSN) 2023 presentation ceremony at the Newcastle Harness Racing Club on Tuesday 9 May.

Scholastic facilities featured on the day included Callaghan College Jesmond, Callaghan College Wallsend, Cook Hill Campus – Big Picture, Hunter Sports High, Hunter Trade College, Lake Macquarie High, Maitland High, St Francis Xavier’s College Hamilton, West Wallsend High and TAFE.

MSN chair Judy Hart said the event was a highlight of the year for the volunteer organisation, which offers scholarships for young pupils experiencing significant socio-economic difficulties or family challenges.

“The main aim of MSN is to provide a pathway where Hunter students can reach their full potential and complete their high school or vocational studies,” she explained.

“We strive to remove inequality for those who have proven capability but are held back by financial disadvantage.

“The 2023 scholarship group comprises 38 pupils from local high schools and four from vocational institutions, some having a refugee background.”

Ms Hart said the MSN had delivered more than 440 grants totalling about $770,000 to students in Newcastle, Lake Macquarie, Maitland and Port Stephens since the organisation was launched 21 years ago.

“We are very fortunate to have great sponsors and supporters, which enables MSN to provide scholarships to assist high school and other pupils, who require assistance in their studies and education activities,” she added.

“Each of them plays an important role in what we do, which we greatly appreciate.”
