Hunter schools remain closed as big wet continues

SHARE

More than 80 schools remain closed due to flooding throughout the Mid-North Coast, Hunter and Central Coast.

And, with further rainfall forecast for Wednesday 21 May, the NSW Department of Education continues to take a safety-first approach.

That will impact local pupils, especially those who attend learning institutes in Clarence Town, Dungog, Gloucester, Hinton, Paterson and Seaham, to name half a dozen.

Deputy secretary of Public Schools Deb Summerhayes said they would follow the advice provided by emergency services.

“Please do not send your child to school if it is closed,” she stated.

“Most areas are still experiencing heavy rain and high winds… and we may need to close more schools in the coming days.

“The decision to do so is always done with the safety and wellbeing of our students and staff in mind.

“So far, we’ve had no reports of major damage.”

While the schools are temporarily closed, pupils will be provided with learning from home resources.

Meanwhile, the NSW State Emergency Service (SES) anticipates Hinton is set to remain isolated for several days.

“On Tuesday night, the Paterson River at Gostwyck Bridge peaked near 14.00m, with major flooding higher than the March 2021 flood level (13.61m),” a spokesperson said.

“It’s likely to stay that way into Wednesday.

“During isolation caused by floods and storms, we can resupply essential food stuffs and medicines to residents and businesses.”

To access this service, follow the procedure:

  • Phone the NSW SES on 132 500 and advise that you need flood resupply. NSW SES will give you a Request for Assistance (RFA) number. This is your reference number. Write it down and keep it in a safe place to quote it to your supplier
  • Ring your normal supplier/store and explain that you are placing an NSW SES resupply order. Quote your RFA number to them and order and pay for the goods required as you normally would. Check that your supplier can deliver your goods to a designated central SES staging point for transportation
  • The supplier is to attach a written note to the goods you require. It’s to include the RFA and telephone number of the business/resident receiving the goods
  • NSW SES will seek to deliver goods as soon as possible depending on resources and weather conditions. It’s likely they’ll be transported by the NSW SES to a central delivery distribution area in your community
