Hunter River High School welcomes completion of major upgrade

Hunter River High School principal Sue Xenos is all smiles.

As someone who attended the Heatherbrae educational institute as a pupil herself, she’s delighted with the new-look facility, which was unveiled this week.

Students will now benefit from the removal of eight demountables; replaced by permanent classrooms, refurbished learning spaces, a gymnasium with a basketball court, and improved school grounds including a state-of-the-art sports field.

A drop-off/pick-up zone has also been completed, improving access for youngsters travelling to and from school.

“Seeing the completion of these upgrades is a moment of immense pride for our pupils, staff and the wider school community,” Ms Xenos said.

“It reflects years of planning and hard work.

“As a former student, Hunter River High has always held a special place in my heart.

“So, it is incredibly rewarding to celebrate this significant milestone.”

Port Stephens MP Kate Washington was equally-thrilled.

“I’m honoured to cut the ribbon at Hunter River High for the opening of the stunning new learning spaces designed for the delivery of quality education,” she said.

“The multi-million-dollar upgrades of our high schools demonstrate the Labor government’s commitment to investing in public education and our kids’ futures.

“Past and present principals, staff and students at Hunter River High are to be commended for their contribution to transforming their school… and making a difference for generations to come.”

Hunter River High is just one of the major projects being delivered in the region to accommodate a growing population.

Other ventures include a new high school for Medowie and a recently-completed upgrade at Irrawang High.

Redevelopments at Newcastle High and Gillieston Public are also underway.

“The completion of the upgrade at Hunter River High marks an exciting new chapter for the school community,” Acting Minister for Education and Early Learning Courtney Houssos said.

“These modern facilities will provide students with the best possible environment to learn and grow, while giving teachers the tools they need.

“We are delivering on our commitment to provide world-class public education structures in fast-growing regional and rural communities, including the Hunter.”
