With just a handful of hours remaining, Hunter residents are expected to scramble for tickets in 2023’s biggest Powerball draw.
The $100 million prize – on Thursday 22 June – is the largest jackpot offered by any Australian lottery game so far this year.
It’s also only the sixth time Powerball has offered such a bounty in almost three decades.
Thousands of local entries a minute are predicted to be generated in lottery outlets and online as players line-up to get a ticket before the draw closes at 7.30pm.
“This is the biggest jackpot offered by any Australian lottery game so far in 2023,” The Lott spokesperson Anna Hobdell said.
“So, we expect it to be busy in-store and online leading up to the final minutes.
“We haven’t seen a $100 million Powerball draw since December 2022 and back then it was shared among three players who each received a life-changing $33.3 million right before the new year.
“On that occasion, the peak of sales was at 5.38pm on the day of the draw when Aussies nabbed more than 5,500 tickets in a single minute.
“Our best advice to lottery players vying for a chance to win this mammoth prize is to get in early and don’t leave purchasing your entry until the last minute.”
Ms Hobdell said people should also register their entries to a player card or online account so they can be contacted immediately after the draw.
“We’re ready to jump on the phone to reach out to any registered division one winners [tonight],” she explained.
“So, if you do see your phone light up and get a call – answer it immediately.
“In January 2019, we revealed a Sydney mum’s $107 million windfall in Powerball straight after the draw as she registered her ticket to a player card or online account.
“We’re ready to do it all over again and crown our second biggest lottery winner in history if one player takes home the entire $100 million Powerball prize.”
In 2022, 22 Powerball division one winning entries across Australia pocketed more than $764.39 million in prizemoney.
