Hunter region backs Harvey’s battle

SHARE

Two-year-old Harvey is the kind of child who lights up a room before he’s even fully entered it.

But, earlier in 2025, he was diagnosed with POLR3A leukodystrophy, an ultra-rare and life-limiting neurological disorder that affects the brain and nervous system.

The condition is so uncommon that many doctors will never see a single case in their careers, leaving families like Harvey’s navigating a devastating diagnosis with limited answers and even fewer supports.

When Wallsend fitness advocate and Guinness World Record holder Shannon Mahoney heard the youngster’s story, he felt compelled to act.

What began as a conversation quickly became “Ruck for Harvey,” a community-driven fundraiser aiming to raise awareness for rare diseases and ease the pressure on the family.

The initiative includes a 160km endurance challenge next May, which acts as a symbolic gesture reflecting the load Harvey carries each day.

Mr Mahoney said the real focus was the two-year-old himself… and the chance to help his family breathe a little easier.

“In a world full of noise, stories like Harvey’s can easily be overlooked,” he explained.

“However, this kid is fighting a battle that most people will never have to face.

“If my legs and a weighted backpack can help the world pay attention, even for a moment, then that’s exactly what I’m going to do.”

Harvey’s mum, Tiffany, is not only his parent but his full-time carer, advocate and emotional anchor.

With him requiring constant support and medical appointments, she had no choice but to step back from work, placing a heavy financial strain on the family.

Through it all, she remains a pillar for both her boys, including eight-year-old Hunter, who has taken on the role of a gentle protector.

Despite having only one functioning lung, Harvey meets the world with a strength that leaves those around him in awe.

He pushes forward with enthusiasm, laughter and a spark that makes his diagnosis all the more heartbreaking.

His resilience is what moved Mr Mahoney, and now the Newcastle community, to rally behind him.

The fundraiser hopes to give the family something simple yet deeply needed, which is time together.

The goal is to send them on a holiday to the Gold Coast, a chance to enjoy theme parks, beaches, and moments of joy away from hospitals and appointments.

So far, $3,865 has been raised toward a $10,000 target, with the community encouraged to donate and share the story.

In a world where rare diseases often go unseen, Harvey’s courage and everyone rising up around him is a reminder of hope.
