Hunter New England COVID cluster passes 4,000

COVID-19 continues to spread in the Hunter New England Local Health District after 53 new cases were diagnosed overnight.

Since 5 August, the region has recorded 4,046 cases with 750 still active, 15 people are in hospital, with four in ICU.

In the Newcastle LGA cases were detected in Warrabrook (two), Elermore Vale, Mayfield, Stockton and Wickham.

Infections in Abermain, Cessnock and Kurri Kurri put the Cessnock LGA on the list while Lake Macquarie also recorded three in Carey Bay (two) and Edgeworth.

The Port Stephens LGA found three in Boat Harbour, Raymond Terrace and Seaham while Singleton added one infection in Darlington.

The remaining cases are in the Mid Coast (21), Moree Plains (13) and Tamworth Regional (three) LGAs.

Twenty-nine are linked to existing infections while 21 were infectious in the community.

It comes as NSW reported 262 new cases and the deaths of three people – two men and a woman.

A man in his 50s from Sydney’s south-west died at home, he was not vaccinated.

Another unvaccinated man in his 60s from Sydney’s inner west died at Concord Hospital.

A woman in her 90s from Sydney’s south-east died at St George Hospital. She had received two doses of a COVID-19 vaccine.

Across NSW, 91.4 per cent of people aged 16 and over are fully vaccinated while 74.2 per cent of the people aged 12 to 15 have received both doses.
