Another valiant effort from Hunter Netball fell just short of a victory in the Netball NSW DOOLEYS Metro League this week.

The Lexi Unicomb-coached outfit was well in the hunt in its clash with Blacktown City at Netball Centre, in Homebush, on Monday night.

But, the Sydneysiders hung on for a close 35-31 triumph.

In a low-scoring opening quarter, the Hunter Netball reps – Emily Morgan, Tara Fidock, Olivia Pirillo, Carrie Lind, Ella Tupou, Zahlee Connolly, Kienna Clegg, Xanthe Rheinberger, Lilian Howe, Ella McCluskey, Mia Marshall and Ella Smith – only trailed 8-6.

And, even at half-time, they were still in the showdown at 17-13.

A big third term, in which the locals outscored their rivals, narrowed the gap to 24-22, with 15 minutes remaining.

However, it wasn’t to be, as Blacktown City prevailed by four goals.

Although Hunter Netball suffered a loss, Unicomb was pleased with the effort.

“Over the past few weeks, we have really focused on executing the fundamentals, sticking to our game plan and communicating,” she said.

“Monday was definitely a step up from previous rounds and there was improvement from each and every player right across the court.

“Again, there are still things to tighten up and work on.

“But, we’re heading in the right direction.”

Unicomb admitted it was fantastic to see the ongoing support for the girls on their netballing journey.

“The team would like to thank executive member Bronwyn Vosilla for making the trip down to Netball Central multiple times this year,” she said.

“It truly means a lot.

“We also acknowledge all our other supporters, who continue to show up each week, and the various training partners, who turn up to cheer us on.

“It’s a huge commitment from everyone in the region to travel to Sydney.

“And, each match is another learning experience.”

Hunter Netball now tackles Inner West on Monday 17 July.
