Hunter Netball: Metro girls let victory slip away

Pre-match Hunter Netball coach Lexi Unicomb described the side’s upcoming opponents Ku-ring-gai as “level pegging with us”.

And, that’s exactly how the two teams ended up after their clash in the Netball NSW DOOLEYS Metro League on Monday night.

Following 60 minutes of action, the combatants were locked together at 35-all at Netball Central, in Homebush.

But, the local outfit missed a huge chance to register back-to-back victories for the first time in 2023.

After an even opening quarter, 10-all, Hunter Netball hit the front 22-18 by the long break.

The side then scored nine goals in the third term to lead 31-22.

However, a poor final stanza allowed Ku-ring-gai to salvage a draw.

Unicomb admitted it was disappointing to let the encounter slip through their fingers.

“We stuck to our game plan for the first three quarters,” she said.

“Evidently, that didn’t happen in the last period.

“A lack of effort and intensity cost us the competition points.

“However, there were players who stood up and did their job for a full four quarters… and that enabled us to leave Sydney with a draw.

“It’s another lesson they’ll learn from.”

Hunter Netball faces the powerful Liverpool City, who suffered a surprising 44-41 defeat at the hands of Camden & District, in round six on Monday 15 May.

Unicomb said it would be a major test for the girls.

“We are now coming into the harder section of the draw,” she explained.

“So, we’ll need to shape up, reflect on the poor decisions made and come back with a better mindset and attitude.

“If we don’t, it’s going to be a tough few weeks.”
