Hunter mayors highlight collaboration, housing priorities at business club luncheon

Collaboration between local government bodies and housing affordability emerged as key priorities at a special function at Newcastle City Hall this week.

The annual Newcastle Business Club’s Mayors’ Luncheon hosted senior civic leadership from four Hunter LGAs on Tuesday 3 February, including Ross Kerridge (City of Newcastle), Adam Shultz (Lake Macquarie City), Philip Penfold (Maitland City) and Leah Anderson (Port Stephens), for an informative symposium on economic transition, employment, accommodation and regional growth.

Almost 200 people attended the sold-out event, which is always a highlight on the organisation’s calendar.

Newcastle Business Club president Sam Rykers said it was a great chance to discuss the challenges and opportunities the region faced moving forward.

“The Mayors’ Luncheon is about bringing leadership together in one room and creating space for open conversation about the Hunter’s future,” she explained.

“With representation from across the region, the event reflects the teamwork needed to support sustainable growth, strong communities and local business confidence.”

Lord Mayor Kerridge outlined Newcastle’s continued evolution beyond its traditional reliance on heavy industry.

He also emphasised the importance of shared responsibility and community-led decision-making in shaping the city’s future.

Cr Shultz outlined the significance of a collective approach, too.

He noted Lake Macquarie was home to approximately 14,000 businesses, with 98% classified as small ventures, while housing and employment remained high on council’s agenda.

Cr Penfold spoke about the merit of long-term planning.

“Sound financial management and investment in infrastructure are crucial to assist both residents and businesses as Maitland continues to grow,” he said.

Cr Anderson targeted workforce attraction and housing supply as critical challenges for the region.

Like her Maitland City counterpart, she believes the role of efficient planning processes in supporting development and investment is equally essential.

“All-up, the quartet reinforced the need for stronger relationships between the LGAs, particularly in addressing housing supply, infrastructure delivery and employment opportunities that extend beyond council boundaries,” Ms Rykers said.

“We’d like to thank them for sharing their thoughts and views with us.”

Further business and leadership events are scheduled throughout the year.
