Hunter man charged by Joint Counter Terrorism Team

A man will appear in court on Thursday as the Joint Counter Terrorism Team (JCTT) Sydney continues to investigate an incident in an office in Newcastle.

About 12.30 on Wednesday 26, officers attached to Newcastle City Police District attended a premises in Workshop Way and arrested a 19-year-old male.

A number of items were seized when the man was searched, which will now by analysed.

He was then taken to Newcastle Police Station and charged with one count of Other acts done in preparation for, or planning, for terrorist act, contrary to Section 101.6 of the Criminal Code Act (CTH).

Following further inquiries, police have become aware of the existence of a document, which had been circulated to several public figures and media outlets.

The man, from Raymond Terrace, will front Newcastle Local Court on Thursday 27 June.

There is no ongoing threat to the community relation to this investigation.

However, inquiries are continuing.

The Joint Counter Terrorism Team Sydney is comprised of members from the NSW Police Force, Australian Federal Police, Australian Security Intelligence Organisation (ASIO) and NSW Crime Commission.

Anyone with information about extremist activity or possible threats to the community should come forward, no matter how small or insignificant you think the information may be.
