With homegrown heroes Issac Heeney and Max King front and centre, Hunter fans are making the most of the Sydney Swans’ stopover in the region this week.
The high-profile AFL club, including the two popular Cardiff Hawks juniors, hosted NAB AFL Auskick and Superkick clinics at No. 2 Sportsground on Monday 1 December and backed it up by visiting more than a dozen local schools 24 hours later as part of its pre-season Community Camp.
Dean Cox’s troops will wrap up the mini tour with an open training session at No. 1 Sportsground on Wednesday 3 December.
A chance to grab the players’ autographs is expected to follow from 11am until 11.30am.
Chair of the Sports Infrastructure Working Party councillor Peta Winney-Baartz said City of Newcastle (CN) was thrilled to welcome the Swans to town.
“It’s great to see them return to Newcastle, utilising our facilities such as No. 1 and No. 2 Sportsgrounds,” she stated.
“We’re proud to provide venues that can accommodate elite teams, creating unforgettable experiences for our young athletes and strengthening the connection between grassroots sport and the elite level.
“Their visit highlights the value of a professional organisation, such as the Swans, extending their reach beyond Sydney and investing time in regional communities.
“That gesture also delivers social and economic benefits by attracting visitors, supporting local businesses, and showcasing Newcastle as a vibrant sporting destination.
