Hunter courthouses to be upgraded

SHARE

Cessnock, East Maitland, Raymond Terrace and Toronto will join more than 50 other regional areas in benefiting from a $9 million investment.

The funding will fast track the delivery of courthouse and corrections facility upgrades across the state.

Parliamentary Secretary for the Hunter Catherine Cusack, Deputy Premier and Minister for Regional NSW, Industry and Trade, John Barilaro, and Attorney General Mark Speakman said the stimulus projects would boost local economies that had been hit hard by COVID-19, bushfires and drought.

“The NSW Government is accelerating tender and planning approval processes and is committed to prioritising local companies and suppliers where possible,” Ms Cusack said.

“It means tradies will be on the tools in record time, creating vital job opportunities for locals who need our support more than ever during this tough economic period.”

The package will see a number of projects in the region fast-tracked.

East Maitland Courthouse will receive $290,000 for fire compliance works, Raymond Terrace Courthouse (heritage building) will receive $170,000 for fire compliance and maintenance works, Cessnock Courthouse is set to receive $65,000 for maintenance works and Toronto Courthouse will use $65,000 for fire compliance and maintenance works.

Belmont Courthouse will also be handed $130,000 for general maintenance and a fire safety upgrade, Broadmeadow Children’s Court received $75,000, Singleton Courthouse gained $160,000 and Muswellbrook Courthouse received $375,000.

Mr Barilaro said the courthouse projects were part of $10 billion in NSW Government support measures to underpin our state’s recovery from the economic effects of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The $9 million funding forms part of more than $100 million for regional stimulus announced last month.

“This package aims to provide a swift and significant injection into regional economies and to that end, the majority of projects will begin this month and be completed this year,” Mr Barilaro said.
