Hunter councils unite to help motorcycling enthusiasts

SHARE

A guidebook that showcases the best motorcycling routes in the Hunter is sure to be a winner among local and visiting two-wheel enthusiasts.

And, best of all, active riders were heavily involved in the development of this resource.

In a joint collaboration between Cessnock City, Maitland City, MidCoast, Muswellbrook Shire, Port Stephens, Singleton and Upper Hunter Shire councils, the 2021 Motorcycling the Hunter publication was officially launched this week.

The unveiling coincides with Motorcycle Awareness Month, an initiative of the Motorcycle Council of NSW, which takes place in October each year.

“There has been a recent rise in the number of fatalities on NSW roads involving motorcycles,” Cessnock City mayor Bob Pynsent said.

“So, it’s more important than ever to make sure that we help them ride to live.”

Motorcycling aficionados are set to benefit from the new handbook, which highlights the most popular rides in the region — from pristine coastlines to wine country roads and beyond.

Councillor Pynsent said Motorcycling the Hunter was aimed at ensuring a motorcycle trip to the Hunter was “both enjoyable and safe”.

“The Hunter is home to some of the most popular motorcycling routes in NSW,” he explained.

“Sadly, in the five years between 2015 and 2019, there were 1,479 crashes with motorcycle involvement in the region.

“For more than a decade, councils in the Hunter have actively worked with our communities to promote motorcycling and improve rider safety.

“This is our third and most comprehensive publication.

“It’s also something we’re extremely proud of.”

The printed manual will be distributed through Visitor Information Centres, council offices, motorcycle outlets, with an online version available on participating council websites, too.
