The message from NSW Premier Gladys Berejiklian is clear – do not let your guard down.

It comes as the Hunter New England Local Health District (HNELHD) experienced a spike in cases yesterday with 18 new infections reported today.

In Newcastle there are five cases with two in Mayfield, one in Mayfield West, another in Elermore Vale and one in Hamilton South.

Another five detections are in Lake Macquarie. Two are in Arcadia Vale, one is in Balcolyn and the final two cases are in Blackhalls Park and Boolaroo.

Port Stephens added four new cases with one in each of the following suburbs; Salamander Bay, Nelson Bay, Anna Bay and Soldiers Point.

There are also two cases in the Maitland LGA in Tenambit and another two in the Cessnock LGA in Greta and Weston.

Eight of the new detections are linked to known exposures or family clusters, and eight cases are still under investigation.

More than 540 close contacts are in isolation and there are currently 161 active infections in the district.

Nine of the active cases require care in hospital.

NSW as a whole reported 1,257 new cases and seven more deaths overnight.

The deaths include a woman in her 60s, three people in their 80s and three people in their 90s.
