Prominent Hunter Valley thoroughbred trainer Todd Howlett was lucky to escape injury following an early-morning truck crash on the New England Highway near Belford.
The incident, which occurred about 4.30am on Tuesday 2 March, closed the main thoroughfare in both directions after the vehicle – carrying five horses – flipped.
A number of NSW Ambulance crews were sent to the scene, along with emergency services, however Mr Howlett managed to walk away from the accident.
He was assessed by paramedics and did not require further treatment.
“Unfortunately, we lost one horse,” a spokesperson for Todd Howlett Racing said.
“The other four are being monitored back at the stables.
“We would like to thank the emergency services, bystanders and vet for their quick assistance this morning.
“Our gratitude also goes to everyone for their calls and messages of concern.
“Lastly, thank you to our staff for all your help under such circumstances.
“We are all in a state of shock and coming to terms with what has happened.”
