How to calculate a 5km radius from your home

SHARE

New restrictions introduced on Monday 16 August mean Hunter residents are being asked to only travel within a 5km radius of their home for exercise and outdoor recreation and to shop for essentials.

The NSW Health website states stay at home now apply, meaning a person who has to follow the stay at home rules can only be away from their home with a reasonable excuse.

Reasonable excuses include obtaining food or other goods and services locally, within your own local government area.

For those needing to cross into another local government area from today, rules state they must stay within 5km of their home.

The updates to the Public Health Order (PHO) have been introduced by the NSW Government in a bid to reduce the spread of the Delta variant of the virus.

It comes after NSW clocked up 6,567 active cases of the coronavirus in the state.

The tighter restrictions replace the previously enforced 10km radius, introduced on Thursday 5 August.

The stay at home rules apply to all regional and rural locations in NSW.

On-the-spot infringement fines of up to $5,000 will apply to those breaching what NSW Police is calling Operation STAY AT HOME.

But without donning the running shoes and marking a 360 degree circle using a measuring tape and chalk, how do you calculate your permitted radius?

The Newcastle Weekly has tried and tested a few websites:

  • www.2kmfromhome.com – Launched in 2020, this website allows the user to type in their home address and the preferred kilometre range, resulting in a map with highlighted radius.

Please note medical or caring reasons, including obtaining a COVID-19 test or vaccination are permitted outside the 5km radius.

If you need to cross into another local government area, stay within 5km of your home.

A full list of exemptions is available at: www.nsw.gov.au/covid-19/rules/affected-regions#other-reasonable-excuses

Hunter residents are also required to carry proof of address with them when away from their residence as well as carry a face mask.

It is vital that anyone who has any symptoms or is a close or casual contact, isolates and is tested immediately.
