Housing boost for people with disability in Lake Macquarie

SHARE

Lake Macquarie state MP Greg Piper has welcomed more housing options for people with disability in his electorate.

It’s now a step closer to fruition thanks to a funding boost through the NSW Government’s Community Housing Innovation Fund (CHIF).

The partnership announcement between Aruma Services and Evolve Housing is expected to deliver 23 new homes across the region.

“It’s great news,” Mr Piper said.

“The investment will create jobs and deliver positive outcomes for people with disability when complete.

“By working with community housing providers, we can deliver life-changing projects that benefit the most vulnerable people in our communities.”

Minister for Families, Communities and Disability Services Alister Henskens said the CHIF was unlocking exciting and innovative development opportunities and adding to the strong pipeline of social and affordable housing.

The NSW Government is investing $1.5 million to support Aruma Services to deliver five disability group homes in Wyee, which will enable 20 people to live and receive National Disability Insurance Scheme supports in the community.

Aruma CEO Andrew Richardson said the funding would provide innovative housing approaches that responded to the needs and preferences of people with disability.

“Our purpose is to support people to live a great life, the life they want and the life they choose through our tailored homes and support,” he explained.

Evolve Housing also received $5 million to build 18 new homes in Morriset, which includes 14 social housing properties and four homes for people with disability.

Lyall Gorman applauded the investment, stating it would result in positive outcomes for tenants and the community alike.

“Inclusive and cohesive services are so important to provide residents with the support they require to sustain tenancies,” he said.
