Hornery demands Privium home-owners are ‘given certainty’

Wallsend state MP Sonia Hornery is calling on the NSW Minister for Better Regulation to “do everything he can” to assist the Hunter victims of the Privium Homes collapse.

The Brisbane-based construction company went into voluntary administration last week, leaving hundreds of dwellings unbuilt across Australia.

It is understood chief executive Rob Harder said in an email to “valued clients and suppliers” that he was “deeply sorry”.

“I understand that this is not the news you wanted to hear and that this will create real difficulties,” he stated.

The firm’s downfall has shattered many people in the Hunter, according to Ms Hornery.

“I’ve been contacted by local residents who have paid substantial deposits to Privium Homes,” she said.

“Now, they are being left without any answers in the wake of the collapse of the business.

“I will ask Kevin Anderson why the government has put protections in place for people buying apartments off the plan but not for stand-alone homes.”

Ms Hornery’s Notice of Motion will call on the Minister to provide some certainty and ensure these investments can be protected so that residents can have their homes completed.

“The collapse of this company has caused devastation for so many families and construction workers across the Wallsend electorate,” she said.

“I have spoken with locals who have lost substantial deposits, their hard-earned savings for their dream home.

“Questions need to be asked at the highest levels of those in charge of what protections are – or should be in place.

“We have seen this happen so many times before but here we are again and nothing has changed to protect clients and workers from losing everything.

“The government has put protections in place for people buying apartments off the plan but not for stand-alone homes.

“This needs to change.

“The Minister needs to provide some certainty for those who are now left with nothing.

“The government has stepped in to rescue sub-contractors and they need to step in again here.

“There needs to be a long-term solution – and the Minister must fix this immediately.”
