The Hunter ambulance zone has officially welcomed 20 new paramedic interns to help relieve increasing pressures within the region.
It comes as the candidates begin the road portion of their 12-month internships required for official accreditation.
Across the state, NSW Ambulance greeted 157 students and 17 trainee emergency medical call-takers.
The trainees were officially inducted into the service at a recent ceremony, serving as the largest orientation hosted by the state this year.
All new recruits, including 20 locally, began their roles over the past weekend and will end their traineeships in early 2026.
The emergency medical call-takers have been posted to control centres in Newcastle and Sydney.
NSW Minister for Health Ryan Park hailed the newcomers as a vital part of the state healthcare system.
“I congratulate these paramedics and control staff, for their dedication, compassion and desire to make a difference in their communities,” he stated.
“Every call the interns and emergency medical call-takers respond to is an opportunity to make a difference and help those in our community in their most vulnerable moments.
“NSW will benefit from the clinical skills and expertise these recruits bring to the healthcare workforce.”
Minister for the Hunter Yasmin Catley said she was excited to bring the talented paramedic interns into the local area.
“Their skills will make a real difference in our region, home to the state’s largest regional hospital,” she explained.
“This intake is another important step in strengthening our frontline health services across the Hunter, helping us continue to make a positive impact on people’s lives.
“As the region grows into one of the state’s top places to live, work and play, we’re proud to support the increasing demand for high-quality healthcare by welcoming these dedicated paramedic interns.”
