Budding artist Honor Adams has painted portraits of celebrities like Simon Cowell and the Queen, but it’s her work on an unfamiliar subject that is having the biggest impact.
The eight-year-old Cardiff artist’s portrait of her family’s sponsored child, Pretty, caught the eye of Compassion Australia, who commissioned her art as the prize in a competition.
“Pretty is seven years old and lives in Indonesia,” Honor says.
“I painted Pretty because I thought she might like a painting of herself – she likes to do drawings just like me.”
Honor, who began painting a year ago, will paint a portrait of the child that the competition winner sponsors through Compassion Australia.
She is generously donating half of her artist’s fee to Compassion to help more children living in poverty.
“I think Australian kids should sponsor other kids so that they can go to school, have medicine when they’re sick and have shoes – some kids don’t have shoes,” Honor adds.
Compassion Australia is an international child development charity with more than 60 years’ experience working with some of the world’s poorest children.
To date, two million children attend Compassion’s church-based program centres in 25 developing countries.
Compassion Australia chief executive Tim Hanna says the charity is extremely grateful for supporters like Honor, who use their gifts to raise funds and awareness for vulnerable children.
“It’s fantastic seeing an eight-year-old with a heart for children living in poverty,” Mr Hanna says. “My hope is that Honor’s art will inspire others to consider how they, too, can make a difference.”
