COVID-19 case numbers have jumped in the Hunter New England Local Health District (HNELHD) after 3,189 new infections were recorded in the last 24 hours.

Tragically, the district also reported another death after a man in his 90s from the Tamworth Regional LGA passed away with the virus.

Of today’s cases, 1,986 came from PCR tests while 1,203 were reported to Service NSW after residents took a rapid antigen test.

Across the HNELHD 100 people are receiving care in hospital with six people in ICU.

It comes as NSW recorded a second-straight day of more than 30 COVID-19 deaths, while case numbers appear to be stabilising.

Thirty-two people died – 12 women and 20 men.

Three people were aged in their 40s, three people were aged in their 60s, eight people were in their 70s, 11 people were in their 80s and seven people were in their 90s.

Overall, 18% of all COVID-19 deaths in NSW have been reported in the past week.

The state recorded 32,297 new cases, including 12,450 from rapid antigen tests.

The number of COVID-19 hospital patients rose 13 to 2,863, with ICU numbers up eight to 217.

More than 27.5% of adults have received their booster vaccination, while one in six children aged five to 11 have now had their first shot.

Other vaccination rates remain stable, with 81.9% of the population having received at least one dose. Children aged zero to four remain ineligible for vaccination.

The eligibility for a booster shot also changed today, people who attend a vaccination centre now only have to wait three months from their second dose.

“We can announce that in our vaccination hubs, our 40 vaccinations hubs across NSW, I will be bringing forward the eligibility for a booster shot from four months to three months,” Premier Dominic Perrottet said.

“As we are clearly seeing boosters are key to keeping yourself, your friends and family safe.”

For booster shots with GPs and pharmacists the eligibility period will change to three months from 31 January.
