For the third consecutive day, the Hunter New England Local Health District (HNELHD) has passed the 2,000 mark for new COVID-19 cases.

It follows 3,213 infections on Wednesday and 2,128 on Thursday.

Overnight, the HNELHD detected a further 2,061 cases, including 1,393 rapid antigen tests (RATs) and 668 PCRs.

On a positive note, however, there are less people receiving care in hospitals across the region.

The HNELHD advised 28 COVID-19 infections were being treated, with one in ICU.

Overall, the state recorded 20,050 positive test results as of 4pm on Thursday 17 March.

That total was made up of 12,355 RATs and 7,695 PCRs.

Sadly, NSW Health reported the deaths of six people: five men and one woman.

One was aged in their 70s, one was in their 80s and four were in their 90s.

Of the six people, two had received three doses of a vaccine, three were double-jabbed and one had just a solitary shot.

Older age is a significant risk factor for serious illness and death for COVID-19, particularly when combined with significant underlying health conditions.

Two people were from the Northern Beaches, one was from Western Sydney, one was from Sydney’s Inner West, one was from Northern Sydney and the other from the Snowy Valleys region.

This brings the total number of COVID-19 related deaths in NSW since the beginning of the pandemic to 2,007.

There are currently 1,060 cases admitted to hospital, including 32 people in intensive care, 15 of whom require ventilation.
