HNELHD experiences surge in new COVID-19 case numbers

SHARE

COVID-19 case numbers have surged again in the Hunter New England Local Health District (HNELHD) with 2,334 new infections detected overnight.

That’s an increase of almost 800 in the past 24-hour period.

Currently, there are 116 people receiving care in hospitals across the region, with seven in ICU.

It comes as HNELHD ceases to provide localised figures in its respective LGAs from Saturday 15 January.

“With the centralisation of rapid antigen reporting at a state level, our local case numbers are no longer an accurate reflection of COVID-19 across the Hunter New England region,” a spokesperson said.

“However, we will continue to report daily hospitalisation, ICU numbers and other important public health messaging.”

HNELHD public health physician Dr David Durrheim also reaffirmed the latest NSW Health changes.

“Anyone who tests positive using a RAT is now required to register their result with Service NSW via the website or app under a Public Health Order,” he said.

“Registering your RAT result enables NSW Health to provide you with advice on self-isolation and managing COVID-19 symptoms at home, to connect high risk people to clinical care services and to help inform the ongoing public health response.

“We urge people to get their booster dose as soon as they are eligible to help protect themselves, their loved ones and the community from the ongoing transmission of COVID-19.

“People aged 18 years and older are eligible for a booster vaccination if they had their second dose at least four months ago.

“While most of our vaccination clinics take walk-ins, booking an appointment is recommended to ensure an efficient experience.”

Appointments can be made online via www.covidvaccine.healthdirect.gov.au/booking/

Sadly, NSW Health reports the deaths of 20 people with COVID-19; 11 men and nine women.

One was aged in their 20s, three were in their 50s, one was in their 60s, four were in their 70s, nine were in their 80s and two were in their 90s.

Of the 20 who passed away, 16 were vaccinated against COVID-19 and four people were not.

Seven people were from south-western Sydney, four were from western Sydney, three were from south-eastern Sydney, two were from the Wollongong area, two were from the Riverina, one was from Sydney’s Inner West and one was from the Mid-North Coast.
