HNELHD experiences drop in new COVID-19 cases

Following a recent upsurge in cases, the Hunter New England Local Health District (HNELHD) experienced a drop in infections overnight, with just 53 reported.

It takes the total number in the current outbreak to 2,622, with 945 active.

But, 17 of those were uncovered in the Newcastle LGA, with nine in Hamilton South alone.

Further detections appeared at Jesmond, Adamstown, Georgetown, Hamilton, The Hill, Wallsend and Waratah.

The Lake Macquarie LGA registered eight throughout Jewells, Dora Creek, Edgeworth, Holmesville, Toronto, Whitebridge and Windale.

The Cessnock LGA decreased from 10 to seven, with three in Cessnock, two in Cliftleigh and others at Abermain and Kurri Kurri.

Seven appeared in the Maitland LGA at Bolwarra, Bolwarra Heights, Chisholm, Lorn, Thornton and Maitland, with five in the Port Stephens LGA (Raymond Terrace, Tanilba Bay and Williamtown).

The Dungog LGA listed a solitary infection.

Mid-Coast and Tamworth LGAs had four each.

Forty-two cases are linked, 34 were infectious in the community and five are still under investigation.

Twenty-four of the current figure is being cared for in hospital, with four in ICU.

Meanwhile, NSW recorded 296 locally-acquired cases in the past 24 hours.

Sadly, NSW Health announced the deaths of four men.

Two were in their 60s, one was in his 70s and another was in his 80s.

Two resided in western Sydney, while the other two were from south-western Sydney.

Three men were not vaccinated, however one had received two doses of a vaccine.

Up to 11.59pm on Friday 22 October, across NSW, 84.4% of people aged 16 and older were fully-vaccinated.
