HNELHD COVID-19 case numbers dip significantly

SHARE

The Hunter New England Local Health District (HNELHD) has experienced a massive dip in new COVID-19 cases.

The region, although still top-ranked within the state, detected 1,329 infections in the past 24 hours.

That tally consisted of 1,081 rapid antigen tests (RATs) and 248 positive PCRs.

It’s a drop of 719 overnight.

Overall, the state registered 9,725 new cases as of 4pm on Saturday 16 April, including 6,339 RATs and 3,386 PCRs.

Sadly, NSW Health reported the deaths of six people: four men and two women.

Two were aged in their 70s, two were in their 80s and two were in their 90s.

Older age is a significant risk factor for serious illness and death for COVID-19, particularly when combined with significant underlying health conditions.

Four people who died had received three doses of a vaccine and two people were double-jabbed.

Three were from south-west Sydney and the other fatalities occurred in Sydney’s north, the Northern Tablelands and the Forster-Tuncurry region.

This brings the total number of COVID-19 related deaths in NSW since the beginning of the pandemic to 2,614.

There are currently 1,527 people admitted to hospital, including 64 in intensive care, 18 of whom require ventilation.

Across NSW, more than 95% of those aged 16 and older have received a first dose of a vaccine, and 94.7% have received two doses to Friday 15 April.

NSW Health is encouraging everyone who is eligible to receive a vaccination or their booster to book into a clinic or another provider without delay.
