Several Hunter-based researchers have been described as global leaders in their field after taking out top spots at the Hunter Medical Research Institute’s (HMRI) Excellence in Research Awards.

The event, which was hosted online last night (Thursday 4 November), was a celebration of individuals and teams across the Hunter who drive and support the opportunities that health and medical research bring to our community.

Daughters and Dads Active and Empowered (DADAE) took out the HMRI Newcastle and Sydney Foundation Research Team honour for its award-winning education program.

The Early Career Research Award was given to Dr Nicole Nathan for her incredible work on childhood obesity prevention programs.

Professor Vanessa McDonald was awarded the Mid-Career Research Award for her investigation around severe respiratory conditions.

The Research Excellence Award was proudly received by Professor Michael Breakspear.

He was awarded the honour because of his use of advanced neuroimaging techniques that has contributed to the better understanding of a range of conditions from schizophrenia and bipolar disorder, to Parkinson’s disease and dementia.

HMRI Director Professor Mike Calford is incredibly proud of the winners for their work and continued efforts, particularly during a challenging year thanks to the pandemic.

“Our award winners’ are a fantastic example of how the research conducted at HMRI is focused on the needs of our community,” Professor Calford said.

“The work of the DADAE team is empowering young women and improving their health, Dr Nathan is delivering evidence-based interventions to lower childhood obesity, Professor McDonald is developing a new paradigm in airway disorder treatment and Professor Breakspear’s advanced neuroimaging research is unlocking the secrets of the brain to tackle terrible diseases like dementia.

“All of these researchers are addressing priority health areas for our community and are global research leaders.”
